Michael Morley a skilled litigator and trusted advisor for business owners and political candidates is the newest member of Betras, Kopp & Harshman’s impressive Complex Litigation Practice Group. Atty. Morley, who joined the multi-state firm on an “Of Counsel” basis, is licensed to practice in New York and Ohio and will work with BKH’s clients in those states as well as Florida.
Immediately prior to joining BKH, Atty. Morley worked directly with Bloomberg Beta (BB), former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s private equity firm, to research and identify locations throughout the United States ripe for private equity investment and growth. During his tenure at BB, Morley coordinated investment and data-seeking tours with Mr. Bloomberg, United States Congressman Tim Ryan, Congressman Ro Khanna who represents California’s Silicon Valley, as well as representatives of SoftBank, Google Ventures, and other venture capital entities.
Mike began his legal career in 1981 at the Ohio-based law firm of Green, Schiavoni, Murphy, Haines & Sgambati, where he counseled labor organizations, arbitrated disputes, and ultimately assisted in directing the Firm’s civil rights division. He left the firm to accept a position as an Assistant County Prosecuting Attorney and subsequently developed and maintained a successful litigation practice for more than 25 years.
Atty. Morley’s practice flourished during the 1990s when he secured the then-largest monetary jury verdict in Mahoning County legal history and tried numerous cases in multiple federal and state jurisdictions as well as the United States Court of Claims. During that time period, both of Ohio’s United States Senators appointed him to chair the committee formed to select a judicial nominee for a newly created seat on the Federal District Court. He then accompanied and counseled the nominee through successful confirmation hearings in the U.S. Senate.
Atty. Morley’s list of domestic and international clients reflects the depth and breadth of his experience, knowledge, and expertise in fields ranging from real estate to entertainment. He serves as general counsel for commercial real estate developers in Ohio and Florida and guided CineBlast, a Manhattan-based film production company, through its acquisition by publicly traded Digital Creative Development Corporation (DCDC OTC). After the acquisition was complete he served as President of the company until the firm was privatized and sold.
Mike has also earned a reputation as a highly-skilled and successful political strategist. In 2019, he served as National Campaign Manager for Congressman Tim Ryan’s Presidential Campaign. In that capacity, he oversaw all fundraising, national campaign activity, policy decisions, and national media relationships. He directed the campaign’s media outreach and messaging and worked regularly and directly with The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, NBC, and regional media outlets across the U.S. He now serves as senior advisor to Congressman Ryan and his PAC and is directing Congressman Ryan’s campaign for reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives.
Mike has served as President of over twenty non-profit boards and charities in Ohio and New York, predominantly in the arts and entertainment sectors. He is also a member of the United States Screen Actors Guild.
Mike earned his undergraduate degree at Youngstown State University and his Juris Doctorate at the University of Cincinnati College of Law.
Mike’s wife, Anita Lin, is the former Artistic Director of Ballet Western Reserve. She was also the sole Ohioan appointed by President Obama to serve on the Kennedy Center-based Advisory Committee for the Arts and is currently on the Board of Directors of the Chautauqua Institution in upstate New York.
Mike and Anita have two children, Chelsea and Darby. Chelsea holds an undergraduate degree with honors in International Studies and Political Science from the University of Miami, Florida, and the Duke University College of Law. She is an attorney in New York City.
